Retaining Wall Tires
Tires belong to the top environmental hazards in the world; disposing them is not easy and cheap. But like what the old adage states, if there's a will, there's a way. So used tires are finding their way towards landscaping and construction sites to be used as retaining wall building materials. Retaining wall tires are commonly used along roadsides and hilly area to hold back soil; you can also find them in landscaping occasionally.
Tires are made of hard rubber that would not rot for several hundreds of years. That is why tires make a good retaining wall building material.
Like the more conventional retaining wall building materials, tires are also stacked on top of each other to build a wall. The top row is slightly pushed back from the lower row stacking one tire on top of the other ensuring that the joints are staggered. Adjacent tires are clipped to prevent it from moving before filling the tire with compacted gravel for added support. A rebar is then inserted vertically through the tire openings to anchor retaining wall tires firmly to the ground.
To hold back large volume of soil, each retaining wall rows can be made of several row of tires clipped together with a metal fastener. A larger rebar is also used to reinforce the tire wall, and mortars are used to fill in the space inside the tire. The structure should be sturdy enough to hold lateral pressure and gravity even if you're going to build a medium size house on top.
In the hopes of educating people about recycling, retaining wall tires are also common in an eco-friendly garden or an eco-park exhibit. To add beauty to the tires, ornamental plants that hang and cover the tires are planted in the tires opening to camouflage them.
