Plants For Retaining Walls

A good way to camouflage retaining walls is to grow ornamental plants that can cover or camouflage retaining walls. You can add color to the cracks and between block and stone spaces by planting flowering plants in your retaining wall. Plants for retaining walls, though, should be chosen well because planting the wrong plant could compromise your wall's integrity.

For instance, plants that grow a strong primary root can't be used to camouflage retaining walls. The roots bore into the retaining wall through the joints thereby cracking it open, and destroying the walls through time. The best plants for retaining walls are those whose roots are fibrous.

Vine fibrous root plants that hang over the wall are best to cover it with greenery to help it blend with nature. Flowering vines are also best to inject color in your retaining wall. They can even turn your boring poured concrete retaining wall into works of art through landscaping. You can use trellises to train vines over to cover the entire face of your poured concrete retaining wall.

Some examples of plants for retaining walls are aubrecia, alyssum, and saponaria. They grow quickly and bloom with beautiful flowers that drown the irritating grey color of poured concrete. Rosemary is also planted along the top edge of retaining walls and allowed to drape over them. You don't only get flowers to cover your wall; you also get herbs for your cuisine. Another great draping plant to camouflage retaining walls is a periwinkle.

Some retaining wall blocks are designed to contain pockets that can accommodate decorative plants in it. These walls are easy to camouflage. You can plant hanging, even upright, plants right on the walls itself because you can place your planting medium right in the wall pockets. But even then, you should make sure that you'll only use plants for retaining walls for the purpose.
